garden leave, gardening leave
«Садовый отпуск». Время от времени британские государственные служащие меняют свои должности и посты. Но не всегда возможно устроить так, чтобы новая (как правило, высокооплачиваемая) должность уже была свободна. В связи с этим служащий получает gardening leave на несколько недель, во время которого он «занимается своим садом», ожидая вызова на новую работу. Зарплату ему при этом, конечно, выплачивают.
